borrowing major concepts from our individual projects and researching los angeles led us to focus the project on a specific demographic of the city: homeless individuals who live in their vehicles. we developed a system that allowed the building occupants' vehicles to be lifted into and become part of their living spaces. the rest of the spaces are designed with a mechanical system that allows them to expand, contract, and connect with each other in order to provide a myriad of spaces that give the occupants the most ideal comfort level in their transitional process.

Towards a New Democracy

undergraduate thesis

my concept revolves around the idea of justice as an integration of the many parts of society all coming together to enact justice and maintain order in the system. the building reflects this idea with strong gestural forms to engage the surrounding context directly, whether it be the two existing courthouses on either side, the adjacent prison, or the public plaza. the resulting composition is the sum of all of these elements, an amalgamation that forms the machine that enacts justice.

looking at intitial kinetic studies in addition to the urban setting of Hollywood and Los Angeles as a whole, this studio campus is derived as a scripted redistribution of the typical programmatic progress of film production. a primary scripted landscape gives way to a hierarchical approach at program distribution, placing the individual soundstage production center at the core of the process and deriving a language of supporting spaces beyond it.

Breaking Constraint

derived from motifs and concepts drawn from various case studies and design exercises, this project became centered around the idea of repetitive program distribution, which articulated into a series of prototypical program modules repeated along a single axis and varying based on necessities. what's achieved is a repeating system based around the smallest and arguably most important element of the building; the individual housing units.
